The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is committed to developing transportation improvements that best balance the transportation needs, the environment, community concerns, and cost. NJDOT will hold a Virtual Public Information Center (PIC) to inform local residents, officials, and the community about the Preliminary Project Plan for the Chapel Drive (CR 623) & Griggstown Causeway (CR 632) Bridge Replacements over the D&R Canal. You are encouraged to participate by providing comments by mail or e-mail. Due to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, the Public Information Center is being held virtually from February 2nd to February 13th 2026. Purpose: The purpose of the project is to replace the Chapel Drive and Griggstown Causeway bridges over the D&R Canal, which are both in poor condition. During the Chapel Drive Bridge replacement, access will be maintained to the Pillar of Fire Campus. The Griggstown Causeway Bridge replacement will require a detour during construction.
Need: The Chapel Drive Bridge was built in 1951 and reconstructed in 1997. The Griggstown Causeway Bridge was built in 1950 and reconstructed in 1990. Due to the poor conditions of the substructures, both bridges require replacement to provide a safe and efficient bridge crossing.
Project: The proposed Chapel Drive Bridge will be a single-span steel plate girder bridge with plank decking. The proposed Griggstown Causeway Bridge will be a single-span steel plate girder bridge with a concrete deck and timber sidewalk surface.
Additional improvements include:
• Widening the bridges
• Raising the roadway profile
• Upgrading ADA-compliant sidewalk
• Install structural bridge railings
• Utility Relocation
• Install flashing beacon for trail crossing at Griggstown Causeway
Estimated Schedule
• Start Construction - Spring 2026
• Griggstown Causeway Detour - Spring 2026
• Complete Construction - Spring 2027
